Costumes for Opening Night. Brace yourselves, it's long.

Hi all.

I’m finally going to get brave and write about costumes. Some parts are easy and other parts are not.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First let’s talk about the Oklahoma part. That’s Oklahoma, Many A New Day and It’s A Scandal, It’s An Outrage. Everyone will need these costumes.

Congratulations girls. For once you have it easy. You all already have your costumes (dress, apron-pinafore, bloomers). I’m going to go ahead and let Bailey and Idalis wear the same costumes that they wore when we performed at that church. There IS a change though, for girls in Oklahoma and that is this: you no longer have a choice when it comes to black jazz shoes. Here is the link to a picture of the kind I want:

http://www.allaboutdance.com/s.nl/it.A/ ... tegory=800

If you already have that type then that’s great. If not, please get them quick.

Boys. Say goodbye to easy. Actually your Oklahoma costume isn’t hard, it’s just a lot less casual. I want everyone to have the same type of jeans and shirts. Here are some links to appropriate jeans:

http://www.sheplers.com/kids/boys_jeans/025031.html

http://www.sheplers.com/kids/boys_jeans/020118.html

http://www.sheplers.com/mens/classic_fi ... 10058.html

I’m sure that you’ve noticed that they’re all Wranglers and they’re all indigo. Get THOSE.

Below are two links for Oklahoma shirts:

http://www.sheplers.com/mens/solid_color/088784.html

http://www.sheplers.com/kids/boys_appar ... ems-rank-5

Again, all Wranglers and all white, button down.

For the boots, IF YOU HAVE TO GET NEW ONES, THEN BUY BLACK ONES. If you don’t have black ones then get ready to lose them because we will be shoe polishing or painting them black.

We are also going to get black cowboy hats and different colored neckerchiefs. Don’t worry about the hats and neckerchiefs yet. OCAG will buy them and then ask parents for reimbursement.

Boys, I don’t care what socks you wear. Your boots will cover that up.

Girls, you need black tights (not panty hose, REAL tights).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Annie (Hard Knock Life). All girls are in this. Now, these costumes don’t have to be exact. Below is a link of Annie costumes. Look at the link and try to find something that looks something like them:

http://www.missem.com/theatrical/orphan ... stume.html

Do your best. The girls will wear the same black jazz shoes that I told you about above and they’ll need a pair of FLESH colored TIGHTS (again, no panty hose!!! Real tights!!)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South Pacific (Nothing Like A Dame). Only boys are in this. Think white undershirts, crappy faded jeans, tennis shoes. Below is a link from a production of South Pacific:

http://www.sandrahartonline.com/images/ ... cific1.jpg

See the guys in the middle? Shoot for something like that. You don’t have to wear hats, but if you have one and you want to then feel free to knock yourselves out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Newsies (King of New York). Again, only boys are in this. Below is a link of a picture from Newsies.

http://members.aol.com/Wigi25/newsies.jpg

Do your best to get something close. Hats are a part of the number and so if you can find them then great. I MIGHT have ONE. I also might not. So, do your best!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sound of Music (My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi and So Long, Farewell). Everyone is in these numbers. If you’ve been with me during any of our summer shoes you already know what you need here. Boys need black pants, black socks, black dress shoes and a solid color top. Girls need black tights, black jazz shoes, black skirts and a solid color top.
The top is going to have to change a bit though. I’m noticing that some of us are getting sloppy. An OCAG shirt turned inside out isn’t going to cut it. I want these shirts to all be long sleeve shirts WITH buttons. I prefer button down shirts but any shirt you wear MUST HAVE AT LEAST BUTTONS AT THE TOP. Also, remember, no one can have matching colors. So, as soon as you have your top let me know or you might have to end up going back and buying another color. And it’s first come first serve. By that I mean I must see it to count that you have it. Emailing me that you have it isn’t going to cut it this time. Once I see it, as long as there is no one else with the color then I will approve it and mark that color off the list.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Godspell (All for the best). Boys only in this and you’ll wear your Sound of Music costume.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Wiz (Ease on down the road). This is just Chris, Gary, Lenora and Zach. Wear the same costumes you wore in An Evening On Broadway.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Wiz - Wicked (He’s the Wiz, Loathing, One Short Day) Chris, Gary, Lenora and Zach, wear your Ease on down the road costumes. Brittany wear the green dress from Cinderella. Tia, dress in black but don’t worry about a hat. EVERYONE ELSE, wear GREEN. Top to bottom. That’s the only color I want to see on everyone whose name is not listed above. For shoes, but cheap simple canvas white shoes and we will dye them green.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yankee Doodle Boy. Okay boys, we’ve been looking sloppy again. You’ll wear black pants, black socks and black dress shoes. You will also need to get long sleeved button down shirts. I’m assigning colors and here they are. Kevin, Gary and Ben will need to get dark red. Chris and Bennett will need to get white. Zach and Antonio will need to get navy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Book of Days. This has Bailey, Brittany, Krislyn, Lenora, Tia, Antonio, Gary, Kevin and Zach in it. This is the OCAG “brave” piece. We’ve never attempted dancing to something and not singing it at the same time. We’re going to be in all black here people.
First, the girls. Below are two links. The first is of a dance skirt and the second is of a dance leotard.

http://www.dancewearsolutions.com/defau ... egory=Wrap

http://www.dancewearsolutions.com/defau ... g%20Sleeve

Now, the skirt is pretty close to what I want. Very light weight and cut above the knees. It doesn’t have to be a million miles above the knees but I do what it above the knees.

In regards to the leotard. I know that some of us don’t feel all the cool in leotards. First of all, no girl (or boy) in this group should feel ashamed or self conscience about their bodies. You are all perfect. However if some girls are just about to die at the idea of wearing a leotard then substitute a long sleeve black t shirt. Please try to make it as form fitting as possible.
The skirt and leotard/shirt will be worn with your black tights and black jazz shoes. If you opt for a shirt you’ll have to wear it tucked into your skirt (and maybe the tights) so get as thin material as you can find.

Okay boys. Here we go. Below are two links. The first is for pants and the second is for shoes.

http://www.dance4less.com/4412_jazz_shoes.htm

Gets pants that ARE LIKE the ones pictured at the link above. While I don’t want you wearing skin tights pants, they can’t be baggy. They need to fit you well. DO NOT GET SWEAT PANTS.

Long sleeve black t shirts are what I want for the tops. But not turtle necks and not sweat shirts. Not baggy. While I don't want them skin tight, I also don't want them hanging down over your knees.

In regards to the shoes, you can handle it. The girls have been marching to Show Biz Dance stores for years now. You’ll live. Get MALE JAZZ SHOES. You’ll need black socks and they’ll need to be thin because these shoes are not supposed to have big thick socks stuffed in them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

West Side Story (America). This is the full cast. For girls I’m looking for peasant/Mexican skirts and tops. Below are a few pictures to help you get an idea:

http://www.southern-importers.com/image ... 24-008.jpg

http://img.costumecraze.com/images/vend ... 2-main.jpg

http://www.resourcerags.com/vintage/skt_peasant.shtml

Ignore the boots the lady in the last shot wore. You’ll be in your black tights and jazz shoes for this one.

Guys, you’ll just need 1950 style clothes but DON’T WEAR THE BLACK LEATHER JACKETS IN THIS ONE. We want We Go Together to look differently.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. All girls are in this one. Every girl in this group knows what she needs except for Bailey and Idalis. So, here we go! You will need Black character shoes, flesh colored tights, fishnet stockings, army hat, shirt, belt and (maybe) a skirt. Look here for what the costume looks like:

http://www.oklahomachildrensactingguild ... cayla.html

You’ll want to look at the first two pictures. We won’t have the red, white and blue ribbon (not enough time with quick changes) but the rest is the same. The army tops can be found at an army surplus store.

Also, don’t forget, this is the one they use the character shoes for:

http://www.dance4less.com/CS_character_shoes.htm

http://www.dance4less.com/TQL_character_shoes.htm

http://www.dance4less.com/MC_character_shoes.htm

As you can see from the pictures, the 1 ½ inch heel and the 2 inch heel look very much alike and I prefer girls to have one of those two choices. I don’t want to have girls hurting themselves however, so if a girl simply can not wear the higher 1 ½ inch then the 1 inch is ok. Remember too that the shoes all need to have just the one strap across them. Don’t get the shoes that have the “Tee/T Strap.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The best place in the City (that I’m aware of) to buy dance shoes/pants/tops/clothes are the Show Biz Dancewear Boutiques. To help, I’ve included each address and telephone number below:

4427 NW 63rd
Oklahoma City, OK 73116
405-840-4406

10625 S Western
Oklahoma City, OK 73159
405-691-6707

334 S Santa Fe
Edmond, OK 73003
(405) 341-7739

Don’t buy shoes online. You’re just asking for trouble.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grease (We go together). Everyone is in this. We go for a big 1950s look here. Poodle skirts, saddle shoes, black leather jackets, jeans folded up with big button down shirts, etc, etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Auld Lang Syne This is the one that I’m looking for choir robes. Anyone know where we could find some?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay. That’s it. Wow. That took a long time to type. Lucky you just have to read it.

If there are any questions, I’m a phone call or email away. I know this is a lot of information and it seems a huge task but really, besides the shoes, it’s not all that bad.

Talk to you all soon.
