Annie set for summer

Young superstars will get a chance to shine this summer as two local groups work together to produce the musical sensation, Annie, starring a cast of child actors and actresses only.

The Oklahoma Children's Acting Guild and Steppin' Out Dance Studio will combine forces this summer to offer a six week musical theatre camp for children 4-19, culminating with the production of Annie, the beloved musical about a little orphan girl, based on the popular comic strip.

Camp Annie will be held from 1-4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, June 8 through July 23, with a week off just before Independence Day. Camp tuition is $120 when made in two payments - $60 on June 8 and $60 on July 6. Parents can also choose to make one total payment of $100 on June 8 and save $20. Tuition includes costume use and performance fees. The show will be held on the weekends of July 24 and July 30.

Auditions will be held on Monday, June 8 at 1 p.m. at Steppin'Out Dance Studio in Tuttle. Children need to have a clear photograph of themselves for casting purposes. If the child does not have a current photograph, a photographer will be on hand to take and print a digital picture for $1. Children may bring a resume of previous performance experience, if desired, but a resume is not required. Parents will need to fill out a registration form before their child auditions. Forms will be available at Steppin’ Out on June 8, or parents can download a form at www.oklahomachildrensactingguild.com or www.steppinout.biz.

Children should arrive prepared to read lines, sing and dance during the auditions. Lines will be available in the lobby for children to look over. Parents of pre-readers can help their children with lines at this time, but they do not need to have lines ready or memorized before their audition. The casting directors will mainly talk to pre-readers and listen for inflection, enunciation and volume. If the child has a song prepared, they may bring it to sing. A CD player will be available. Those without a prepared piece will be asked to sing a familiar song (generally Happy Birthday). Children with jazz or ballet shoes should bring them to the audition, as all children will also be taught a short dance routine to perform for the casting directors. All children will be cast in the show. All children who wish to have a speaking role will be given lines in the show. Children who do not wish to speak in the show or to sing solos may inform the directors of their request during auditions. Children may not need to stay the entire three hours on June 3, and parents are encouraged to stay on site to take their child home after the auditions.
